Listen, fuckers. I have had a shitty summer. People have abandoned me, my dad almost died hardcore, nobody is around, Miki moved in with us, Gene moved into the hospital [Bremerton can bite my ass, kids], I've been sick, my mom has been excedingly nasty for possibly justifiable reasons [though those reasons do nothing to alleviate stress of any kind], we're $30,000 in credit card debt, Camcast sucks, my internet doesn't work half the time, drama with people has been nearly constant, my camera broke and I dropped $400 on a new one, and finally, my laptop is not being shipped until August 31st.

So, tonight, I am giving the world and the summer the middle finger.

Actually, I don't really want margaritas at all. It's really pretty symbollic.

I'm like "WTF mate."

It's machete time, ladies and gentleman. It's all gettin cut down.

Watch out. I'm ready for action.

Tonight, I'm listening to Bif Naked, putting on makeup, and talking self-portraits with my camera. And working on my web site. And doing photo edits and uploading them. Sweet, motherfuckers. Sweet.

I zoned out at one of the fund-raiser meetings today and when I came back, I gave that little head shake and smirk I usually do as if I was actually thinking about something. It was hilarious, I caught it on TV later on. Maybe I'll watch it a few more times tonight.

So I was like, "OMFG GWBush has a blog! It's true and I'm looking at it." Then, I looked to the right and there was a link to EMAIL THE PREZIDENT! But then I saw it was going to some kid at Northwestern and I moved on.

*shrugs*

In other news, Tim was doing his fantasy football stuff today, which is really confusing to me [kinda like school, u know what I mean? Skool is hard.]. He was doing this thing called "the draft," which is where these guys sitting at their computers covered with chilli and beer choose the dudes for their virtual teams.

I remarked to myself as I walked into B&N today [talking to Tim on the cell], that he said "I'm really excited for the draft." Now, in context, I know what he's talking about. But that's one of those wonderful snippets of conversation that are only warm and fuzzy in the proper topics. I pictured him and me, sitting in a cafe, surrounded by veterans. He says that same line, and gets fucking BOUNCED by 40 guys who were all in Vietnam. Do you get it?

Anyway. I stole a luna bar from work [by stole I mean payed for] and am eating it. I have no lunch or dinner today at work *cries uncontrollably*

PS: I sent my HUM app. SWEET. Now I need to START my FRS apps ;)

Hey guys -- please read this and tell me what you think. This is my application to HUM216-219.

I talk -- a lot. I’m loud, I’ve got a lot to say, and appropriately, I want to go into a career where I get paid to tell people what I think. Whether I end up as the matter-of-fact editorial editor of the New York Times or the fresh voice of reason on NPR, I, Nicole Hopkins, will become a journalist. Aside from the fact that I may very well make 30k a year for longer than I’d like, and the possibility that my coffee addiction may not end in college, I’m pretty excited about starting my career; I get the feeling that I’ve got a lot of work to do.
Everyone knows that there are two basic types of journalists: the rational and the irrational. One relies on vigilance and integrity in the pursuit of truth, the other relies on sound bytes and flashy graphics; one seeks to gain, develop and communicate wisdom, the other seeks to rashly communicate baseless commentary; one has a foundation in history, intellectualism, and reflection on human experience, while the other is narrow sighted, sparsely read, ignorant and visceral. In short - one knows what he’s talking about, and one wants to look like he does.
The first sign of irrationality is aversion to reflection. If I can’t admit I’m wrong or that I might not have considered all the possibilities, there isn’t much that separates me from a banner-waving aphorism-spitting talking head. So, in taking my own advice, I’ve done some reflection, and I hereby declare that, at this point, I rarely know what I’m talking about.
Well, that might be a tad sensationalist, and it’s a little early to be developing bad journalistic habits. But in reality, my knowledge of history, literature, the arts, and even [much to my chagrin, as it is my intended major] philosophy is several notches below par. While Julius Caeser is far and wide my favorite Shakespeare, and Kissenger’s Diplomacy a longstanding member of my favorite books list, I haven’t taken World History in a long time, and my “History of Christian Thought” class turned into somewhat of a study hall. My copies of Augustine’s Confessions and Ovid’s Metamorphosis sit dusty, unread since I last skimmed them in my precocious sophomore year [and untouched since I last rearranged my bookshelf]. And while at one time my literature instructor may have considered me an aspiring classics scholar, I frankly can’t remember Herodotus from Josephus and Cicero from Seneca.
While it’s tempting to declare that I don’t need to read and study those dusty old volumes, I haven’t quite given up on the high road. There’s a reason that certain works are considered classics: generation upon generation has found within certain tomes a wisdom and inspiration transcending much of human thought. Classics are timeless reminders of what humans could achieve.
It is in the discovery and application of abstracts that one can be called an intellectual. I am not interested in being a flash in the pan; it is not my goal to give in to convenience. Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” What works will go unexamined and what shadows of my life unenlightened if I pass up the Humanities Sequence? It is in the seeking of wisdom that one becomes wise; it is my duty to seek that I may find - and then to tell others of the source.
Now is the time to choose the category into which I will fit. To choose the path of convenient answers and infotainment-style proposals will mean a life of browsing through a catalog of masks and platforms - randomly choosing whom I will please and entertain. To choose a path marked by virtue and diligence will mean the utmost of effort, perseverance, and humility in reflection. This is a question of existence, after which a career and legacy will follow.
The ignorant renounce history, abandon truth, blind themselves to beauty.
I will not renounce, I will not abandon, I will not avert my eyes; I want to understand, to grasp, to admire so that I may harness the best of my ability. I want to enroll in Humanities; I’m ready to get started.
